A welcoming place to know, love and serve God.

I drove by the store in Port Huron Toys R Us the other day. Pretty much anybody who has kids knows its a store filled with a wide variety of toys (and especially the kids know). I wouldnt go there to find a mans wallet or a bread-making machine. Its called Toys R Us (my computer doesnt have the capability to make a backwards R in the name of the store) because it is filled with toys. Thats why you go there, to get a toy. And I thought, what makes a church a Church, and why do we go there?
In our reading from 1 Corinthians 1:1-9, the Apostle Paul says a Church is when people (he called saints, which is what you and I are whether we like the title or not) gather together in a place to call on the name of our Lord Jesus Christ. When Paul talks about being Church he uses words like sanctify, which means to become more like Jesus, and called, which means God has somehow led you to this place---you belong here. And Paul says fellowship, which means being connected to God, and also joined to each other and thats why the time after our Sunday service that some call coffee hour is so important because its part of Church, part of fellowship, part of talking and listening and being involved with each others).
So today I thought Id talk about being Church in my sermon: Church R Us. Where positive people go to find other people trying to be better by calling on God together, and hearing scripture, and modeling the life of Jesus. Church is not a place we go to hear about the disturbing negative news on the TV, or to hear about politics (most of you know more about politics than I do) or to find people acting the same way cut-throat shoppers may act at a Macys 70% off after Christmas sale.
We go to Church because we are social creatures; God said in Genesis, It is not good that a person should be alone. The grand, uniting factor is that we Kids (imperfect as we are) are Gods kids (regardless of your age), each one of us is diverse, distinct, and real.
Church R Us!
