A welcoming place to know, love and serve God.
Our gospel today in Matthew is about 10 maidens (that would be us) waiting to go to wedding party (heaven), waiting late into the night, and how 5 have no oil for their lamps when the groom (that would be God) comes to gather them into the wedding reception at the great VFW hall in the sky. Jesus’ parable tells us there are certain things we cannot obtain at the last moment. A student cannot wait till the last minute to study for test; a scientist cannot obtain results if he does no research; a politician cannot wait to campaign if he or she wants to win an election. Some things cannot wait. This is true in life as well.
If we wait too long, if we put off the big, universal religious questions of who we are and where we come from and where are we going, we can be unprepared to hear what God wants to say to us; see where God wants to lead us; feel God’s continual tug on our hearts. If we are too busy and keep putting God on the side burner to keep simmering and within reach in case we need him, if we are too preoccupied with ourselves to say “YES” to a relationship with God---it can be too late.
And at the twilight of our lives, or at some point of inevitable crisis, that relationship, or lack there of, will tell each one of us whether we said yes or no to God---and no one will get away with saying maybe forever.
