Luke 9:28-36 gives us his version of the transfiguration, where Jesus changes form revealing his dazzling white heavenly glory to three disciples with him on the mountain top. A divine voice echoes down; This is my Son, my Chosen; listen to him!
I like this story because there is no explaining it away; it is supernatural (above the natural). I believe in the supernatural because all of Christianity began in the supernatural, above nature, outside of time and space, in the majesty of the heavenly spheres, in the eternal glory of God.
Many scholars pick up the bible with the mind set that there are no miracles, nothing supernatural between the covers, and then they perform an autopsy on the dead pages of antiquity. But scripture is more than that; scripture is alive, penetrating, revealing, communicative, guiding, the provocative message of God to us. The story of the transfiguration puts awe back into scripture --- and it is truer than anything else in the story of Jesus. Because when we really see Jesus; when we look through the history, through the ancient dust and tired commentary, beyond the laws of physics, outside of the cloud of 21st century cynicism, and look with the eyes of faith, we will see his glory and be changed.
Some historical figure, some character in an ancient story, isn’t going to transform my life. Some fictional drama isn’t going to change the way I live and stir my soul. Only Jesus, the Son of God, the Chosen one will
do this…and I will listen to him.
